Generally I cover the Industry 4.0 shopfloor implementations in automotive and industrial heavy goods space but I have also been following the digital transformation pursuits of Unilever, and that too globally and not just for Unilever India

Industry 4.0 shopfloor implementations at Unilever

The benefits observed by CPG companies are less percentage wise compared to those in automotive and industrial goods space, atleast this is my observation, though the data-points are still limited to make a very conclusive argument

In terms of Unilever's progress, below are some key pointers worth noting :-

  1. Raeford facility, North Carolina, US

The firm manufactures brands such as Dove, Degree and Axe. They have implemented digital process twin to assess process flow restrictions thus enhacing model prediction of process by 95% and waste reduction of ~20%. Process twin also provides the ability to enhance capacity by 10%, though no proof-point of the same has emerged

  1. Haldia facility, India

The firm manufactures surf and sunlight detergent and has intelligently installed energy twin to optimize for fan speed, temperature settings and moisture controls. Reports and insiders suggest that the plant was earlier observing problems with thermal heat management and HVAC systems, those have also been catered through thermal energy systems monitoring and optimization

  1. Gandhidham facility, India

The firm develops personal care products in this industrial setup and has upgraded SPC and visual inspection systems to reduce quality defects by 30% in Dove soap manufacturing and packaging

  1. Poland facility

For the mayonnaise production, waste reduction has been observed though not significant enough for now to mention the quantitative benefits for the same

  1. Vietnam facility

Across 360 degree production of personal care and agri products, 1-2% cost savings have been observed in premium raw material procurement and transport by deployment of intelligent TMS. Core idea behind the same has been to ensure good quality procurement at slightly lower cost

I am tracking lot more changes and keep updating the piece, but among the CPG majors, Unilever seems to have an edge for now
